Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Q. What age groups are available to play in AYBA Basketball?

A. AYBA rec leagues now have entry level basketball beginning in kindergarten (must be 5 years old at the start of the kindergarten year), through the 12th grade. There are both boys and girls leagues available.

Q. At what age do boys and girls play in separate leagues?

A. Boys and Girls play together in the kindergarten league, but then play on separate leagues beginning in the 1st grade.

Q. Do you adjust the courts, rim height, or basketball size for younger players?

A. Yes, we make a number of adjustments based on age so that skills can develop properly.

  • For Kindergarten leagues, we use 6 foot rims with small basketballs on shortened courts. The games are played 4 on 4.
  •  1st and second graders play together on lowered 8 foot rims with a 27.5 inch basketball, also 4 on 4 shorter than regulation courts.
  • 3rd graders play on 9 foot rims, high school length court with a 28.5 inch basketball, but the teams play 5 on 5 basketball at this age.
  • 4th graders play on 10 foot (regulation height) rims, 5 on 5, regulation court with a 28.6 inch basketball.
  • 5th and 6th graders are combined into two leagues, a blue division for more advanced players, and a white division for less advanced. These games are 5 on 5 on 10 foot rims, regulation size high school courts.
  • 7th and 8th graders are also combined into two divisions, 5 on 5 full court. The boys use a 29.5 inch full size men’s ball while the girls remain on 28.5 inch women's and youth size (the same used in women’s college and the WNBA)

 Q. What is the difference between AYBA Rec Basketball and MetroWest Travel Basketball?

A. AYBA recreation basketball is open to all players of all levels. There are no tryouts to make a recreation level team. Players are evaluated to make sure that teams are balanced and competitive in this league. Middle school evaluations (Grade 5 through 8) are held in September of each year, while elementary evaluations are held in early November of each year. Metrowest basketball is highly competitive and plays in a league of nearly 100 towns in Eastern Massachusetts. These teams are for more advanced players and require tryouts to make the team.

Q. Are there tryouts for Recreation Basketball? How do I sign up?

A. No. Rec leagues are open to all players. To sign up for a rec league see the home page for links to league sign ups.  Although there are no "tryouts", we do have evaluations to balance teams.
